Soul Swimmers are number one

Soul Swimming Club, based at Clearwater Estate and with a number of Benoni swimmers as members, won the Eastern Gauteng Aquatic (EGA) Championship for the first time recently.

Vanessa Bartie, chairwoman of the club, said: “This is our fifth season as Soul Swimming and to win the champs for the first time is a great achievement.

“A big thanks must go out to our two wonderful coaches, Merril Stainton Prinsloo and Donnie Semple, and all our dedicated swimmers who participated.

“Our theme for Champs this year was the “SOUL survivors” and the children had a lot of fun dressing up as pirates.

“We are a family club and take pride in nurturing talent.”

Overall, Soul Swimming Club had 51 swimmers competing at the championship, where they won 62 individual medals (27 gold, 20 silver and 15 bronze medals), while 14 relay teams also brought back medals.

“Our swimmers broke a few records and all achieved some really great times, with 10 soul swimmers being selected to the EGA Strategic Development Squad,” said Bartie.

“We do still consider ourselves a young club, but look forward to growing and achieving more goals.”
