Ruthless rugby from NWU
The second week of the Assupol Super Club Series continued on Saturday, March 8, and Benoni Rugby Club hosted their first competitive fixtures on their home fields, at Hoërskool Hans Moore, against North West University (NWU) Vaal.
The visiting teams were always going to be a tough assignment for the Benoni club’s u-21, second and first sides, as NWU’s three teams enjoyed wins by big margins.
The benefits the NWU students enjoy in terms of having more time to train and excellent facilities available were clearly evident, as their teams were well organised and on top of their game.
The u-21 Benoni team were up first and were beaten 60-12 by their opposition.
The second team did not fare any better, as they, too, succumbed to their visitors by a large points margin, with a score of 41-14, in favour of the students.
The Benoni first XV were also on the back end of a heavy defeat, and were defeated 43-15.
Ryno Greyling scored two titillating tries, and fullback Morne Rossouw slotted a conversion and penalty to give Benoni their only points of the game.
Steve Myburgh, public relations officer for Benoni Rugby Club, said: “We took some knocks, but we saved some face, as all our teams did themselves proud and did not back down against the tough challenges that NWU brought.”
This coming week will be another tester for Benoni, as the team face Potchefstroom’s Pukke.
“This competition does not get any easier for us, but it is good to have exposure against teams of this calibre to determine where we stand as we prepare for the regional Valke League, later this year,” Myburgh added.
