Warm up for the Slow Mag

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the running of the Slow Mag Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, April 27.

The race comprises a 5km fun run, 10km, 21.1km, 42.2km marathon and a 50km ultra-marathon.

This race has become a popular attraction amongst runners countrywide.

Sponsors, Merck, have enabled hosts Benoni Northerns Athletic Club to build this race into one of South Africa’s most popular Comrade’s qualifying events.

The 50km race was introduced three years ago and has proved to be popular, gaining more and more athletes each year.

Slow Mag’s route is fairly flat, with some long, gentle hills, and is a reasonably easy run.

The race is well organised and presented and has been voted as one of South Africa’s top 10 marathons.

There is a walker’s category for the half-marathon distance, while grand masters and blind runners enjoy free entry for this race.

It is a fun day out for the whole family, with catering, coffee, secure parking, bar facilities, children’s entertainment, music and a great vibe.

Organisers have requested that motorists take note of the dates and posters marking the route ahead of time, and be patient and courteous, as there will be traffic disruptions and road closures on the day.

The ultra, full and half-marathons begin at 6.30am, while the 10km and 5km family fun run start at 6.40am, at Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

Pre-enter online at www.enteronline.co.za until April 18, or enter at local sports shops.

Late entries will be taken at Benoni Northern’s Athletic Club on Saturday, April 26, from 2pm to 5pm, and on the morning of the race, from 4.30am.

There will be no postal or faxed entries.

Enquiries can be made at the race office, on 076 839 6800, by email at bnacraceorganisers@gmail.com, or by contacting Madge Attwell on 083 573 1011.
