Lake Club’s champions

The Lake Club Benoni Golf Championships were played recently, with more than 230 members participating in what proved to be a successful and highly competitive event.

After the recent heavy rains in Benoni, the course played extremely long, but was in pristine condition, with the greens running very fast.

Due to the heavy rough, good course management and straight hitting was always going to be vital to good scoring, and this was certainly the case with eventual champion Dean Kupferman, who showed extreme patience and kept the ball on the fairway in both rounds.

The early pace was set by 20-year-old Alan Bester, with a superb round of 68 in the first round, followed by Chris van Tonder on 73 and Kupferman on 74.

The second round saw van Tonder jump into contention with a par, birdie and eagle start; with Bester dropping a few shots, it was anyone’s title.

However, it was the solid play of Kupferman that proved to be the winning formula and he went on to post a fine 69, with a gross total of a one under par 143, winning by four shots ahead of Armand van Dyk on 147.

The club championships results are:
