Record field for BCC golf champs

After much anticipation, Benoni Country Club's (BCC) rain delayed club championships took place over the weekend of May 10 and 11.

Despite the tournament falling on Mother’s Day, a record 147 players participated.

The course was in immaculate condition, thanks to green keeper Deon Becker and his staff.

The tournament committee set a challenging course, made all the more exciting by very slick greens and some tough pin positions, especially on Sunday.

“The tournament went off without any hitches and thanks go to the tournament committee, the Stix and Stones staff, and all Benoni Country Club staff who were involved in ensuring that the weekend was professional, yet fun, for all participants,” said Toni Quattro, a BCC committee member.

The challenge was deftly managed by 22-year-old Clinton Cheia, who carded a fantastic 70 and 72 to claim the trophy and title of Club Champion 2014, by six shots over defending champion Sean Prytz (76 and 72).

An elated Clinton said: “Club champs was the one win that I wanted more than any other.

“I have worked countless hours to reach this goal and my hard work and focus has paid off.”

He thanked Benoni Country Club for a well run tournament and for a pristine course.

The women’s championship was hard-fought for by eight players, ranging in age from 75 to nine years.

This weekend it was the turn of the youngsters to triumph.

The 2014 women’s club champion is nine-year-old Kiera Floyd, who carded an exceptional 79 and 87, while fourteen-year-old Jennifer Haw (87 and 82) was the runner-up.
