Top honours for BNCC’s best
Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) held their annual prize-giving function for the 2013/2014 Easterns cricket season on Saturday, May 10, at the club.
Premier League all-rounder and Easterns amateur player Ernest Kemm, who was absent on the night, was awarded the club’s main accolade of Cricketer of the Year.
The former Tuks captain, who also played two Sunfoil Series matches for the Titans, scored 281 runs in 10 innings for the club, at an average of 35.13 per innings.
He top-scored with 90 not out, achieved two half-centuries and took 24 wickets in 70 overs, at an average of 7.13, with best bowling figures of four wickets for six runs.
His award was accepted on his behalf by Premier League captain Kurt Francis.
Kemm also earned the Most Valued Player award from coach Thys van Lingen.
Levon Shields, who returned to the team following a break from the sport last season, was honoured as the Batsman of the Year (298 runs in 13 innings at an average of 24.83 per innings for the Premier team), while the Bowler of the Year award was claimed by Lance Humphrey, who took 27 wickets in 103 overs with a 13.41 average.
Youngster Marlow Moore was awarded the title of Roland Metzer Young Cricketer of the Year, while the league-winning Promotion League XI were selected as Team of the Year, as they pipped Kempton Park to the title by a single bonus point.
Juan Schaerer, who took over the reins as captain of the Promotion XI from Ryan Pfeiffer halfway through the season, earned the Coaches’ Award and shared the Clubman of the Year award with Premier XI skipper Francis.
Gavin Rademeyer’s Chairman’s Award was handed to the junior committee of Clint Breen and Anthony Martindale, for maintaining the standards set last season, as well as consistently striving for excellence both on and off the field.
The awards were handed out by the experienced Titans fast bowler, Ethy Mbhalati, who also shared some interesting tales from his long career.
