Winning start for Benoni Rugby Club
Benoni Rugby Club kicked off the new Valke Merlin League campaign on a winning note, when they travelled to neighbouring Kempton Park, on Saturday, May 17.
The first team struggled to find momentum at times, but were able to fight hard and beat their rivals in a close 30-28 match.
Quin van der Nest dotted down twice, while Sarel du Plessis and Devan-Lyle Kruger scored a try each.
Mornay Rossouw slotted two conversions and two penalties.
Jacques Dorfling again had a stand-out game, and was announced as the Man of the Match.
Benoni’s second team also came out strongly, to beat Kempton 20-0.
Rico Marx and Renier Esterhuizen scored tries and Phillip Spies added points from the boot with a conversion and penalty.
Raymond Nel also slotted a well-weighted drop goal.
Marx would walk away as the Man of the Match for a fine performance.
“If we keep up the attitude we have in the club at the moment we could be in for a very successful season,” said Benoni Rugby Club’s public relations officer, Steve Myburgh.
The team’s next game will take place away, against Edenvale, on Saturday, May 24.
