Local baseball player makes SA u-15 team

With local baseball player Rowan Ebersohn making news recently, after signing a seven-year deal with the Minnesota Twins, in the USA, it seems that Ekurhuleni is definitely a breeding ground for young baseball talent.
On Monday, Northmead resident and Kempton Red Sox Baseball Club player Fabio Sá Miranda (14) flew out with the South African u-15 baseball team to Mexico, where the team will be taking part in the International Baseball Federation’s (IBAF) 2014 u-15 Baseball World Cup.
The tournament is held from Thursday, July 31, to Tuesday, August 10.
The pitcher and third baseman is one of two Easterns players in the team and he will be hoping to make his mark against some of the best players in the world in his age group.
The other Easterns player selected for the team is Boksburg Cardinals’ Cullum Lee (14).
The South African team, ranked 16th of the 18 teams at the tournament, will not have it easy when play starts.
Playing in the u-15 Baseball World Cup for the first time, the team will face the daunting task of takingplaying against the baseball powerhouses of the world in the USA (ranked one) and Japan (ranked two) who have both been drawn in their pool (Group B).
The team played two warm-up games against an Easterns u-18 team and a Gauteng u-18 team before their departure and were defeated on both occasions by the strong opposition.
