Benoni’s Buys flies the wakeskating flag in Norway
Northmead resident and former Benoni High School pupil Matti Buys (23) is officially the third best wakeskater in the world.
This comes after he placed third in the open men’s wakeskate finals, at the eighth Cable Wakeboard World Championships, at Norsjø Cable Park, in Norway, on Saturday, August 16
He finished behind German wakeskaters Moritz Thiele (first) and Marcel Tilwitz (second) in the final.
Speaking to the City Times about his achievement moments before boarding a plane to Orlando, Florida, where he will be completing the last stop on the US Wakeskate Tour, before heading back home for the South African summer, Buys said: “It feels really great [to come third], especially after we had two South Africans in the six-man final.”
His South Africa team-mate Darren Turner also qualified for the final, on Saturday.
“To place third in the world sounds pretty cool, but then again it is only a reflection of how well you rode on the day,”he added.
“To me it is just another step in the right direction and another good experience for myself and the South African wake industry.”
South Africa finished fifth overall, jumping up five spots from 10th place in 2012.
