More local footballers off to the USA

The rich football talent within Ekurhuleni was showcased at trials, hosted by Heroes Futbol Association and Bonaero Park ’74 FC, in Kempton Park, recently.

Coach Mike Lee (a former Benonian) of the Muskegon Risers, an independent professional team located in Michigan, USA, was highly impressed with the talent on offer.

The City Times recently reported on the club’s signing of former Benoni Northerns player Alexi Munro, and now three more Benonians have put pen to paper to join the Risers.

Brogan Shrimpton, Matthew Robinson and Keagan Frawly (all from Benoni) will play in Michigan, as will Bandile Mathandala, from Kempton Park.

There was a good turnout at the trials (ages ranging from 15 to 25).

Players aged 18 years old and below were tested for high school and university scholarships, as well as for prospective university scholarships and selection for professional/semi-professional teams in the future.

Sean Humphries (Benoni) and Gian-Luca Schunke (Edenvale) were approached regarding selection to two available spots at Weslyan Christian High School, in North Carolina.

Heroes are still in discussion with other players and parents, regarding university scholarships in the near future.

The head director of Heroes Futbol Association, Sidney Frewen, said: “I want to thank all the players and parents for taking on this challenge.

“The trials were held in a good spirit and all players showed great sportsmanship.”

He also thanked Bonaero Park ’74 FC for their assistance in facilitating the trials.
