Connor is a double champion
Benoni resident and cyclist Maurice Connor pedalled his way to victory at his first attempt, in the 70 to 74 years old category, at the recent South African Time Trial.
As the race was only 10.68km long, Connor went hard from the start to record a time of 18 minutes and 58 seconds (an average speed of 37.4km per hour), to beat the second rider home by a margin of two minutes and 21 seconds.
In the South African Road Race, Connor, riding for Team MWS, again went hard from the gun with a distance of 54km to be covered.
After a lap and a half Connor found himself alone in front and time-trialed the remaining distance of 40km to finish the race in a time of one hour, 33 minutes and 57 seconds.
This was a staggering seven minutes and 27 seconds ahead of the second-placed rider, giving Connor his fifth South African Road Race title.
He is now focused on the South African Track Championships, which take place in Johannesburg in April, and he is confident that his recent fitness will win him more titles, but this time on the track.
