Van Wyk finally achieves his goal
Benonian Martin van Wyk, of Team Europcar and Van Wyk Track Academy, has always been an excellent track cyclist, with many South African titles, but his goal has always been to win a South African road cycling title.
The closest he has come to winning a road title was in Durban, in 2011, when he was in a leading breakaway, but suffered an unfortunate crash on a dangerous descent and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries that left him unable to finish the event.
This year everything came together for Van Wyk, however, and he was able to win double gold for the road race and time trial at the 2015 Pennypinchers South Africa Road Championships, in Nelspruit, recently, in the 45 to 49 year age category.
His next goal is to win a title at the World Masters Track Championships, in Manchester, in the United Kingdom, in October.
There, Van Wyk will enter the individual pursuit, points and scratch races.
