Homer shines on New Zealand greens
Northmead resident and blind bowler May Homer recently represented South Africa at the Disability Bowls Association World Championships, in New Zealand.
The tournament, which takes place every four years, was held in Wellington, at Hutt Bowling Club and Naenae Bowling Club.
The tournament lasted for two weeks, during which time Homer played singles and pairs, accompanied by her husband, Paul, who is also her director (her eyes on the green).
She managed a silver medal in the singles and a gold medal in the pairs, while South Africa won the team trophy for the fourth time.
According to Homer, it was particularly difficult to play on the greens, which were considerably faster than those in South Africa.
This, combined with the gusting winds, made accurate bowling a challenge for all the competitors.
