Old Bens put five past Kempton
Old Bens Football Club’s first XI travelled to Kempton Park on Saturday, July 4, for an ELFA Super League encounter.
Before the game had even got underway, three of Old Bens coach Raymond Cloete’s regular starters stated that they would arrive only at halftime, due to work commitments and funeral attendance.
As a result, Cloete opted for a defensive formation at the start of the match.
A bad bounce of the ball, however, forced a defensive error and allowed Kempton Park in to score an easy goal.
Cloete stuck to the defensive tactics, though, and eventually his charges equalised via a sublime volley from Lesiba Modau, that would send both teams into the halftime break with one goal apiece.
The Bens coach made some introductions to the game about 10 minutes into the second stanza, which allowed him to alter his formation to a more attacking one.
This restructuring immediately paid dividends for Old Bens, as they took control of proceedings.
A brace of goals from Ludick Malele and one each from Sonnyboy Mkwanazi and Lasego “Wii” Mlangeni put the game out of reach for Kempton Park, with the score 5-1 in favour of the visitors.
Kempton would bag a second five minutes before full time, from a counter attack, but that was all that they could muster up as the game ended at 5-2 to Bens.
“I am extremely happy with the way the boys played, as Kempton Park are fourth in the league and are a good side,” said Cloete.
“We just have to find a bit more consistency, but it’s difficult, as a result of team changes every week.”
