Stars play SA u-23s at Northerns

Free State Stars Football Club, currently training at Benoni Northerns ahead of the 2015/2016 Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL), played a friendly match against the South African u-23 national soccer team on Friday, July 10.

Spotted at Northerns on Friday was former Charlton Athletic and Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett who was just yesterday announced as u-23 coach Owen Da Gama’s assistant ahead of the team’s crucial encounter with neighbours Zimbabwe on Sunday, July, 19 at Rufaro Stadium, Harare, in an important Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualifier.

The winner of the South Africa/Zimbabwe two-legged encounter will qualify for the Eight Nations qualifying tournament which will serve as a final qualifier for the Rio Olympics.

The Eight Nations tournament in Dakar, Senegal, will be played from November 28 to December 12.

In the match on Friday it was the Bethlehem-based Free State Stars who would get the win by a 2-0 score line.
