Benoni u-21s braced for final reckoning
The scene is set for a Saturday final showdown between Benoni Rugby Club’s u-21 side and Kempton Park, at the Valke Rugby Union’s home base, at Barnard Stadium, on August 22.
This comes after the Benoni young guns ended their u-21 Merlin League campaign top of the table, having won nine of 10 matches played, with the sole defeat coming against this weekend’s opposition.
On Saturday, August 15, Benoni stormed to a 58-0 victory over Nigel on their Hoërskool Hans Moore grounds, running in nine tries to wrap up the game.
The u-21 team did not give Nigel any room to move from the outset.
Prop Dawie Pieterse scored the first try within the first minute (the first of a hat trick of five-pointers in the match), to set the tone for the day.
Benoni ran in six unanswered tries in the first half, with JP Bryder, Carel Nimb, Johan Botha and Takkies van Staden (two tries in five minutes) ensuring that the game was beyond Nigel’s reach at half time, with a score line of 38-0.
The u-21s relished their strong second half position, scoring a further four tries through Jeff Gerrall, Charl Carelse and Pieterse, who rounded off his hat trick with two tries.
The team’s coaching staff of Rocco Duvenage and assistant coach Gordon Pretorius could feel proud of having had the enviable task of coaching a well-disciplined, talented side that has shown commitment and dedication to each other and the club.
All Valke Union’s finals, Peregrine, Merlin and Kestril leagues, will be played on Saturday, at the Barnard Stadium, in Kempton Park.
The clash between Benoni’s u-21 team and the Kempton Park u-21s will kick-off at noon.
