Northerns win East Rand hockey derby

It was a terrific opening to the hockey season for Benoni Northerns men's hockey sides playing in the Southern Gauteng Hockey League over the weekend.

The Northerns first team launched their campaign with a double-header.

On the afternoon of Saturday, April 2, the team squared up against Jeppe Men’s B in a game which they dominated for most of the time, conceding a last-minute goal that forced a 4-4 draw.

The following afternoon, Sunday, April 3, saw the always fierce Easterns derby against CBC Old Boys Men’s A being won 4-3 by Northerns.

Peter Tucker and David Fik both scored drag flicks off penalty corners, with Desmond Sanders and Dale Griffiths scoring field goals.

The Benoni Northerns second team opened their season with an Easterns derby game of their own against CBC Men’s B, which they won 3-0.

Wesley Kruger scored one goal, while Dean Kemp scored two.
