Northerns hand out homeground hiding

The goals keep on coming for Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI.

The team played their first ELFA Super League home match of the season against Corinthians on Saturday, April 18, and brushed aside any doubts that their scoring form would take a dip with the loss of striker Brogan Shrimpton to the USA.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s team made it 18 goals in three matches when they mauled their opponents 8-1, at Northern Areas, on Saturday.

Van den Berg’s attackers came to the party as they frequently found the back of the net.

Sixteen-year-old right midfielder Kwanda Sokuto again impressed with a brace, while Tshatsho “China” Molapo, Thulani Themba and substitute Joel Nchableng all bagged two goals of their own.

The coach said he was particularly proud of the young players who stepped up on the day, but felt that the opposition did not put up the best fight.

“The guys went for the throat and stuck to our game plan,” he said.

Although the team is scoring freely and showing good signs at the moment, the coach believes that the stern tests are still to come in the form of Randburg, Luso Africa and local rivals Old Bens, among others.

BNFC will play Edenvale away from home on Saturday, April 23.
