Mixed bag for Benoni Northerns FC

A score line of 2-1 was the prevailing occurrence in Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first team’s two ELFA Super League clashes this week.

In a space of three days, coach Jannie van den Berg’s men enjoyed a 2-1 victory at home to Germiston on Freedom Day, Wednesday, April 27 at Northern Areas followed by a loss by the same result away to perennial league powerhouses Highlands Park on Saturday, April 30.

The defeat put to bed a string of winning results for skipper Wade Marshall and his team.

At Northerns on Wednesday, Marshall secured all three points with a late free kick from just inside the opponents’ half that caused the Germiston goalkeeper all sorts of problems.

On Saturday, the team were on the receiving end of a late Highlands Park winner.

Left midfielder and former Old Bens player Dean Steyn opened the scoring for BNFC in the first stanza before Highlands found an equaliser just before the break.

Despite winning some good free kicks in dangerous positions, Northerns couldn’t capitalise on their chances and paid the price when their hosts bagged the winner late on in the match.

“It was just one of those games,” said van den Berg.

“We weren’t necessarily outplayed by Highlands, but they did take their chances better than us on the day.”

According to the coach, the loss hasn’t dented the confidence of his players.

“As I have kept on saying we are still a work in progress and slowly getting to where we want to be.”

The team will play Kempton Park away from home on Saturday, May 7.
