Summersgill shines in Israel

Airfield resident and visually impaired bowler Beppie Summersgill and her director and husband, Cedric, recently attended the friendly International Four Nations Championship, in Israel, as part of a South African invitational team.

Beppie, with her pairs partner Derek Carter, from Krugersdorp, and his director, Karin Gouws, won gold in the Israel International Open Pairs Competition.

They then went on to take the runners-up position in the four nations test matches played between England, Scotland, Israel and South Africa.

The Benonian also went on to finish as runner-up in the women’s singles competition, in the same series.

“It was the first time that we have ever had international experience and I don’t know if we will have the opportunity again,” Beppie said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to play overseas and it was good to meet and interact with people from different countries, as well as the many expat South Africans there.

“Everything was beautifully organised and the bowling went way beyond our expectations.”

The talented bowler now turns her attention to helping to develop blind and visually impaired bowlers through the National Association for Blind Bowlers – Ekurhuleni Region (NABB:ER) workshops, at the Atlas Bowling Club.

“Our aim is to share the game and the enjoyment of the sport with other visually impaired people in Ekurhuleni,” she told the City Times.
