Shuffled line-up plays out to a draw

Drawn results were the theme for Benoni’s ELFA Super League teams on Saturday, July 2.

While Benoni Northerns drew 2-2 away from home, coach Raymond Cloete’s makeshift Old Bens Football Club first team also picked up a point after a 1-1 draw at home to Kempton Park.

A much-changed Bens outfit, particularly the defensive line, due to last weekend’s controversial suspensions, stepped out onto the Currin Park pitch.

Their inexperience as a unit was telling as they conceded early into the first half through a defensive blunder with Kempton intercepting and capitalising on a loose back pass to take a 1-0 lead.

Nicholas Simelane, playing up front for Cloete in his new-look structure as opposed to his normal position out on the left side of midfield, found the equaliser for Bens.

It could have been much more for the Old Bens men as they struck their opponent goalkeeper’s woodwork on four occasions in the second stanza.

Although not the desired result, Cloete was happier with the team’s performance this week.

He will now take his reshuffled squad to Primrose for a tough away encounter against Luso Africa on Saturday, July 9
