Old Bens bounce back from three goals down

A topsy-turvy week of football action for coach Raymond Cloete and his Old Bens Football Club's first XI ended with one of their most memorable fight-backs in recent times – a 4-3 home ELFA Super League victory versus Alberton, on Saturday, August 13.

Before that the team was on the wrong side of a 4-0 league hammering away to Sporting, on Women’s Day, on Tuesday, August 9.

Cloete described Tuesday’s large defeat as “our worst game in three years”.

“We just didn’t pitch up to that match,” he said.

On Saturday, at Currin Park, things appeared to be going from bad to worse for Cloete’s side, when they found themselves staring down the barrel with the score at 3-0 down, about 60 minutes into the encounter.

Goals from Sibusiso “Xavi” Mkhwanazi, a brace from top-scorer Lesiba Modau and a late, volleyed strike from substitute Daniel Dyson clinched the most unlikely three points for Old Bens.

Regarding Saturday’s incredible comeback, Cloete said that two second-half substitutions of striker Percy Visagie and right winger Dyson made a telling difference.

“At 3-0 down I was thinking that I was going to go home crying, but we fought back well and somehow scored four to win it.”

He added that the win will provide excellent motivation for the team heading into this Saturday’s tricky away clash versus Zwide, and ahead of next Saturday’s “Benoni Derby” against Benoni Northerns.
