‘Boom Boom’ Benoni Northerns down Kempton to win Easterns Club T20 Competition
Benoni Northerns Cricket Club's Premier XI proved that they are the best side in the 20-over version of the game in the Eastern Cricket Union after winning the Eastern Club T20 Competition against longtime foes Kempton Park Cricket Club at Sahara Park Willowmoore's main oval last night (February 1).
BNCC stormed to a six-wicket victory over their opponents.
Northerns won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Kempton’s opening batsman Anton Muller led the charge with the willow and his 52 runs from 32 deliveries helped Kempton to a score of 135/9 in their 20-over innings (a run rate of 6.76).
Wickets for BNCC came from Kundai Matigimu (2/28 in three overs), Stiaan Jordaan (1/17 in four overs), Lance Humphrey (1/27 in four overs), Regardt Verster (1/21 in four overs) and Stefan Jordaan (1/24 in three overs).
The fielders also forced three run outs.
With the bat, a 68-run opening stand from left-handers Ernest Kemm (38 runs from 27 balls) and Rhenier Jordaan (29 runs from 20 balls) set up the ideal platform for Northerns to chase down the 136-run target.
Number five batsman Tian van der Walt (29 runs not out from 19 balls) and number six, skipper Kurt Francis (20 runs from seven balls) took the Benoni outfit across the line in 16.5 overs (a run rate of 8.2) to give the Premier XI their first competition win under coach Nicolaos Moragemos.
BNCC captain Francis said: “It’s just an unbelievable feeling to win a competition even though it’s not the big one [the Eastern Premier League].
“A win is a win though, especially after all the hard work that we have put in.
“We played amazing cricket over the last two weeks and the boys deserve this feeling.”
The skipper praised the Benoni public and the “Northerns family” for their support last night.
Kempton (who are five points clear of Northerns at the top of the 50-over Premier League table) will again square up against their Benoni rivals this Sunday (February 5) at Northern Areas in what should be an intense battle between first and second in the league.
Francis and his BNCC team will be looking to make it a double dose of victories over their rivals in the space of a few days.
