Rain decides Spurs’ fate

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI played their first match of the second round of Eastern Premier League fixtures when they travelled to CBC College in Boksburg to face off against CBC Old Boys on Sunday, February 5.

The visitors won the toss and put CBC in to bat on a flat track.

CBC Old Boys got off to a decent start, but Actonville took two quick wickets to halt their charge.

Good batting from Wesley Coulentianos (55 runs) and Nicholas Lockyer (113 runs not out) together with a solid partnership in the lower order saw CBC end on 271/8.

Actonville’s stand-out bowlers were Michael Enslin (3/46) and Wilber van Dyk (3/46).

When the away side went into bat they lost an early wicket, but a good second wicket partnership between Mark Pearse (46 runs) and Kyle Degambur (63 runs not out) helped steady the ship.

They lost the wicket of Pearse just before rain interrupted proceedings.

The teams never went back out onto the field and, despite the game being nicely poised, CBC Old Boys would win via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

• Meanwhile, ASCC’s junior teams enjoyed a winning weekend.

The club’s u-8 B team defeated United for their first win of the season while the u-10 A side beat Vosloorus.

The u-12 A team also enjoyed a win over United while the u-14 A side stretched their unbeaten run from the first half of the season with victory over Etwatwa.

Actonville will be hosting an u-12 A eight-a-side festival for all the teams in u-12 A age group on Saturday, February 18.

The tournament will be sponsored by the Indianapolis Spur (in Westwood, Boksburg) and spectators are encouraged to support the juniors, who will provide terrific entertainment.
