Old Bens hit Corinthians for nine in league clash

Old Bens dished out a hiding on Saturday.

The trip to the Greek Sporting Club in Bedfordview on March 10 was a fruitful one for Old Bens Football Club’s first XI where they played Corinthians in an Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League clash.

The team put nine goals in their opponents’ net and it could well have been more.

Despite the convincing victory, coach Raymond Cloete was modest and humble in his report back on the match.

“It was a convincing win for us and could have been a whole lot more,” he said.

“I felt sorry for the Corinthians team as they fielded a team filled with youngsters who played the game in good spirit, but I couldn’t tell our guys to stop scoring goals.

“Sometimes when teams are getting hammered they revert to hacking out and tackling poorly, but they did not lash out and are a good bunch of guys.

“It’s a pity that they were not a bit stronger because we have a tough game coming up on Saturday against Luso Africa and could have used the challenge ahead of the game.”

The club’s reserve XI played to a 2-2 draw.

Both teams will play Luso Africa at Currin Park on St Patrick’s Day (March 17).

The reserve team opens proceedings at 1.45pm while the first side play at 3.30pm.
