The teenage kart driver said that the championships at Zwartkops were a ‘tough week of racing’.

“I spent the Thursday and the Friday practising at Zwartkops,” he said.

“On Saturday I raced a regional karting event and on Sunday the African Open took place.

“I managed pole position in the time trial and in the first and second pre-final I only managed to get a second and third place.

“I was concerned starting the final in third position, but once the lights went out I managed to move up to second position going into turn one.

“For the next six laps I settled down in second position and pressurised the leader.

“On lap eight I challenged for the lead and moved into first position.

“I was passed on lap nine and dropped back down to second.

“On lap 10 I retook the lead and managed to hold on to it for the rest of the 20-lap race.

“Although the EU champion Liam Crystal was close on my tail I managed to break away and extend the lead.

“This is the first time I’ve managed to win the Africa Open in my 11 years of karting.”
