Karate kid earns his national stripes

Jaun-Pierre Vermeulen (17), a member of the Dan Triangle Karate Club, has been awarded Protea colours in karate from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

He was chosen to represent South Africa in the Karate South Africa (KSA) All Style Championships. He has competed in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Karate championships held in Gaborone, Botswana, recently.

He won a bronze medal in the u-21 division for kumite (fighting).

He also competed in the KSA All Style Durban League on June 24 and won a bronze medal for kumite in the u-21 division.

Vermeulen, who is a brown belt, started at the Dan Triangle Karate Club at the age of seven under the tutelage of stalwart instructor sensei Chris Anthony.

He was awarded his official Protea colours certificate on June 22 at the KSA awards dinner in Durban.

Anthony has produced four national karatekas at his Dan Triangle stable.

The club has dojos in Benoni, Brakpan and Boksburg.
