Drum roll please, the Benoni Football Derby is coming this Saturday
It is Benoni Derby time!
The biggest club football match on the East Rand is back for a second time this season when Old Bens Football Club make the 2km ‘trek’ to long-time enemies Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) on August 11 for the famous Benoni Football Derby.
Both Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League sides have had topsy-turvy campaigns in 2018.
Coach Raymond Cloete’s Old Bens first XI, currently in fifth on the log, started the season strongly, but have slipped up in recent weeks and have dropped out of the desired top four.
Their most recent league defeat came on August 4 when they were beaten 3-0 away to Kempton Park.
They could be carrying tired legs into the derby as they have an ELFA Super Cup quarter-final clash against Zwide on August 9 to deal with first.
Bens lead coach Jannie van den Berg’s Benoni Northerns first XI, currently in sixth place on the table, by three points with a game in hand.
Northerns, however, will be confident after two successive league wins, their most recent being a 3-2 home win over Germiston on August 4.
Bens’ top goal scorer Themba Vilakazi and Northerns’ young striker Kwanda Sokutu are the players to watch.
Coach Darren ‘Fish’ Lee’s BNFC Super Reserve League team already have one hand on the Eastern Local Football Association Super Reserve League title.
They performed a 5-1 demolition job against Germiston on Saturday.
They lead the league by eight points with five more games to play.
They will also be playing a cup quarter-final match against Zwide at Northern Areas on Women’s Day.
Old Bens’ reserves, fifth on the table, were also on the receiving end of a 3-0 scoreline versus Kempton Park on Saturday.
The reserve fixture opens proceedings at 1.45pm followed by the first side at 3.30pm.
Get down to Northern Areas for the famous Benoni Football Derby.
