LISTEN: Beastly Kerri’s big heart keeps her going

Huntington hopes that by sharing her story she can motivate others with pacemakers not to feel limited and bogged down.

Ebotse resident Kerri Huntington, an administrator at the Glynwood Hospital’s radiology department, is a go-getter of note and just oozes competitiveness and determination.

That’s exactly why she didn’t let getting a pacemaker fitted recently due to heart problems to get the best of her.

Four weeks after having the pacemaker fitted, Huntington, who is also a personal trainer, took on the Beast Challenge Obstacle Race, held on September 15 in Lanseria.

The local with a big heart teamed up with colleague Angelica Rieckert and participated in the Beast #16 event, a 10km run which features 30 challenging and physically demanding obstacles along the way.

“It’s quite a challenge, but if you’ve got passion and drive in you then you can go for what you believe in,” she said.

“It was tough, we did walk a little bit here and there, but we did get over all the obstacles despite the difficulties.”

Huntington added that it is the sense of achievement, and that feeling at the end of the race of overcoming fears and reaching the goal that pushes her on.

“My heart was strong during the race, and there were no problem.”

She is now eyeing other obstacle races including the at Toyota #WARRIOR8 Race in November.

“Life goes on and doesn’t stop after having a pacemaker put into the heart,” she added.

“Obviously you have got to be careful, but you can still live your life.

“You don’t know how far you can go until you try it.”
