LISTEN/READ: Play water polo and help revitalise the sport in Benoni

Join the club and help get water polo back to where it once was.

Not too long ago the sport of water polo was thriving in Benoni with many quality players originating from these parts.

Due to various reasons, the numbers of people participating in the sport dwindled in recent times.

A group of guys and girls from the Benoni High Water Polo Club are trying to reinvigorate the sport in Benoni and on the East Rand by calling on past and potential new players to join them in the pool.

“Benoni High Water Polo Club, established in 2017, is a new player to the Eastern Gauteng Water Polo scene,” said senior member Bradley Savage-Reid.

“Over the course of the past season we have managed to establish two sides in both the Gauteng Third and Fourth Leagues respectively, however, we are struggling to secure numbers and grow the club to its full potential.

“We train twice a week at Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool and play weekly fixtures.

“With the help of Benoni High we will be hosting fixtures towards the end of the 2019 half season and will be hosting fixtures weekly at the start of the 2019/2020 season.

“The goal for Benoni High Water Polo Club is to field three sides by the year 2022.

“The need to redevelop and regrow the sport on the East Rand is all-important.”

Savage-Reid said that although the club is called Benoni High Water Polo Club, due its affiliation to and support from the school, it is open to all skill levels.

“Anybody at any age can join us, whether you are a former player or new.”

Ex water polo players, those wanting to relive their glory days, as well as newcomers can contact Savage-Reid on 082 781 4701 or email bsavagereid@gmail.com for more information.
