United’s fine nine shine in Oudtshoorn
Tremendous performances from the local kickboxers.
Nine fighters from the Lakefield-based United Martial Arts International (UMAI) Benoni dojo participated at the South African Kickboxing Association’s National Championships held in Oudtshoorn recently.
The National Kickboxing Championship attracted 388 athletes from all nine provinces.
Competitors battled it out in various categories, including point sparring, continuous sparring, kick-light sparring, forms, weapons, low kicks, full contact and K1.
The nine Benoni athletes represented Gauteng East and won a whopping 28 national kickboxing titles.
UMAI Benoni’s Mahmood Mahomed (two national titles), Berenge Bezuidenhout (three national titles), Laila Latif (one national title), Ali Latif (three national titles), Andione Bezuidenhout (three national titles), Marriam Latif (three national titles), Hannes Castelyn (three national titles), Ahmad Mahomed (five national titles) and seven-year-old Salaamah Mahomed (five national titles) all impressed at the event.
“These results are phenomenal,” said UMAI’s chief instructor and president of the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) Africa Region Five Kickboxing Confederation, shihan Aslam Mahomed.
While in Oudtshoorn, Mahomed met with the mayor, Colan Sylvester, at a mayoral gala dinner at the Oudtshoorn Inn Hotel.
“It was a special and interesting evening spent with the mayor, explaining the history of Oudtshoorn and the improvement and upliftment of sports within their province,” he said.
