U-19 Cricket World Cup launched at Willowmoore Park
This will be South Africa’s second time hosting the u-19 world cup.
Hosted by South Africa, the 13th edition of the U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 was officially launched at Willowmoore Park Stadium today (December 19).
The launch welcomed Geoff Allardice (ICC general manager), Makhaya Ntini (tournament ambassador and former SA professional cricket player), Sivuyile Mqingwana (tournament director), Wayne Parnell (South African cricketer who plays for Worcestershire in English county cricket) and Jacques Faul (Cricket South Africa acting CEO).
Sixteen countries will participate in this tournament in an attempt to dethrone India, who are the current champions.
The matches are limited to 50 overs, with 48 matches being played across four provinces, namely Gauteng, Northern Cape, Free State and North West.
Out of the 48 matches that will be played, 20 will be televised on SuperSport.
The countries playing in the tournament are:
• Group A: India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Japan.
• Group B: Australia, England, West Indies and Nigeria.
• Group C: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Scotland.
• Group D: Afghanistan, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Canada.
The tournament dates are January 17 to February 9, with the finals being held at Imperial Wanderers Stadium.
The Plate finals (bottom two teams) will be held at Willowmoore Park Stadium.
