Benoni has a secret champion
Webb started playing bowls when she was 21 years old; her parents were very big bowls players back in the day.
Benoni resident Colleen Webb has been secretly keeping all her achievements to herself.
She led with her mom for nine years and learnt enough to now put into her own teaching.
She has been playing bowls for 24 years and has racked up achievements throughout the years.
Although Webb plays bowls for the Discovery Bowling Club, she resides in Benoni and is a Benoni girl at heart.
Webb has played in the Masters Singles every single year except for one.
While playing in the Masters Singles yearly, she has been stacking up the medals and trophies, gaining four silver, six gold and four bronze medals.
She also competed in the Commonwealth Games alongside bowls partner Nici Neal, where they gained a silver, and then Webb did the singles and walked away with a bronze.
Last year, Webb was one of the five women chosen by World Bowls to play against the Australian team in the 2019 Open.

“I was one of the players chosen, then there was one from New Zealand, one from Canada and two English women who were also chosen,” said Webb
“We then competed against the Australian team and it was a very close game, but we didn’t manage to defeat them.
Webb is looking most forward to competing in the World Indoor Bowls in April this year, which is being held in Bristol, England.
This is the first time it is being held in Bristol. It is usually held on the Coast in Australia, which is also a new, exciting venture for Webb as she has competed in Australia before. This will be her first time in Bristol.
Her partner for the mixed pairs category in Bristol will be Wayne Rittmuller, but she will also be competing in the singles category. Webb will then be competing in the World Bowls competition which will be held this year in June, Australia.
“I am nervous, but very excited for this competition,” said Webb.
When asked what has been most challenging when it comes to bowls, Webb replied: “Indoor bowls is a lot different then normal outside bowls. You have to take into account a lot more, like the carpet, for example.”
The inter-provincial tournament is coming up in March and will be held in Port Elizabeth, where teams such as Benoni Northerns will be participating.
Teams from 24 district will be eagerly competing for the gold; Benoni wishes Webb good luck on her venture.
“I am very nervous, but bowls is a part of me now and always has been; it is in my blood,” said Webb.
“I get butterflies just like everyone else playing a sport, but once I start playing I am happy.”
