Croquet players rolled off the green

Local Croquet players are in dire need of a venue and are begging the East Rand Clubs for help.

Avion Croquet Club members are in desperate need of a venue.

Their club used to be at the Avion Bowling Club, in Kempton Park, but after speaking with the landlord of the club, Armando Loureira, he advised the club has closed due to debt and non-payment from previous tenants.

The situation became such that he was forced to close the club indefinitely.

“We’re homeless now,” said avid crocquet player Benoni resident Vivienne Ridyard.

Letter to all sports clubs

“We have been so happy at Avion Bowling Club as it is a lovely venue where we have always felt like we were playing in the countryside.

“Although we are known as the Avion Croquet Club, once we – hopefully – find a new venue, we can change our name.

“This is a big change for us but we need to do it, especially now that just the other day we had the sad task of removing our hoops and balls from the club.”

A bowling green is now needed for this croquet club to indulge in their passion for the game.

“We paid a membership fee at Avion and can do this at the next club that can offer us the space we need.

“We’re hoping that one of the East Rand clubs will come to our rescue,” concluded Ridyard.

If you have a space for the Avion Croquet Club to continue their practise and possible matches in the future, contact Vivienne on 073 147 5505.
