Croquet club has a new home

Croquet members had to move on after the Avion Bowling Club closed its doors.

Local croquet players have finally found a green they can practice and play games on.

Their club used to be at the Avion Bowling Club in Kempton Park, but the landlord of the club, Armando Loureira, said the club had to close its doors due to debt and non-payment from previous tenants.

Avid croquet player and Benoni resident Vivienne Ridyard said the croquet players then approached Kleinfontein Bowling Club and they agreed to grant them use of one of their greens.

“Our new place is lovely. We have played there twice and are very happy,” said Ridyard.

“We don’t have teams as such, but we play singles or doubles.”

The members play on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Ridyard added they haven’t yet decided on an official new name but will put their heads together soon to come up with a fitting name.

“I think Kleinfontein Croquet Club sounds good, but we shall see what we all come up with.

“We are very grateful to the management of Kleinfontein Bowling Club for giving us the opportunity to play croquet once again.

“It is wonderful to be able to wield our mallets and whack those balls through the hoops once again after a long wait for a new venue,” she concluded.
