BNAC halts time trials

Northerns has stopped time trials due to it becoming dark earlier.

Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) has concluded time trials a little earlier than usual due to it getting darker earlier.

“We normally stop our time trials the week before Comrades, but this isn’t the primary reason – it’s just too dark to have our juniors running safely out on the route,” said John Ansell, former chairperson of BNAC and current member.

“The quality of the road surface has also become an increasing problem over the last two years – even instances of tree roots pushing up the tar – and this could lead to a very nasty fall in the dark.”

Although sport had an interrupted season due to the level three lockdown in December, BNAC still had their course records broken for both men and women.

• Kate van Jaarsveld broke the women’s 4km record on May 11 with a 14:48.

• One week later Melinda Janse van Vuuren shaved off 11 seconds with a 14:37.

The time trials are always open to the public.

“About 60 per cent of the people who participate are not members of the club,” he said.

“Anyone is welcome, we would also like to thank the motorists and residents who drive and live along Wilge Road for their patience every Tuesday evening.”
