Tommy victorious in his first match back

There were eight rounds within the fight, and Oosthuizen claimed the win on points.

Benoni boxer and Boksburg resident Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen returned to the ring victorious after beating Youssouf ‘El Terrible’ Mwanza on points at the Metropolis in Parkview, Pretoria, on September 18.

Harry Ramogoadi-Manaka, his coach and owner of VIP Boxing Academy in Benoni CBD, said, “The fight went great. I think it was the kind of fight Tommy needed for his comeback after a nearly three-year layoff.”

Oosthuizen added, “The fight went the way myself and my team needed it to go, not the way we wanted but what we needed.”

There were eight rounds within the fight, and Oosthuizen claimed the win on points.

“Mwanza is a tough guy to beat and very fit but Tommy’s experience and skills prevailed,” said Ramogoadi-Manaka.

Oosthuizen is grateful for the outcome of his first match in three years.

“To be honest, I believe the outcome was accurate as I landed the cleanest punches,” he said.

“Youssouf stayed on his feet continuously, but one thing I will say is my coach was right, the longer he stood the more punishment he took. He showed tremendous character standing through the punches, but he is hurt wherever he is now. I still have a lot of respect for him for putting up a good fight.”

Some moments stood out more than others for these two avid lovers of boxing.

“For me, just Tommy being able to fight at cruiserweight, against a strong tough guy, being able to land and shake him with some solid punches, especially the left hook in the first/second round, was a moment on its own. I am very proud of what he accomplished,” said Ramogoadi-Manaka.

Oosthuizen said, “The moment that really stood out for me was to have seen the bond and passion me and my coach, my imbitlayako, share. Both of us trust God. It’s like a match made in heaven and when God creates a bond like that, all we can do is show the world what we as a team are capable of.”

Oosthuizen’s next fight is still in the pipeline, as discussions still need to be had with the promoter.

“We are looking into November for his next fight and proper plans for the way forward will be made after that fight,” said Ramogoadi-Manaka.

“Next year is going to be a big year for Tommy and people are going to see some amazing things from him in the ring.”

Oosthuizen thanked his coaches for all their support and dedication towards him and his love of boxing, as well as BCT for taking the time to find out more about him and his comeback journey.

“Thank you for taking the time to find out more about us. I do not feel it is needed for myself and our team to discuss what we will be fixing, but we know our business. We have started talking about what needs attention,” he explained.
