B20 Cricket Bowls is back!
Play will start at 10:00 but registration will open from 08:30 for any teams that have only provisionally booked and want to sort out payments and draw positions.
In honour of the late Mike Blackstock, former club captain of Benoni Lake Club Bowls, a B20 Cricket Bowls day will be held on November 14 at the Lake Club.
In the past, a game of B20 Cricket Bowls consisted of teams of three players, but back then they had to turn bowlers away due to the numbers wanting to register.
“So this year, we will be changing the playing format slightly and we will be playing with teams of four, everything else will remain the same,” said Tony Norris, one of the founders of B20 Cricket Bowls.
“Registration should be done well in advance to ensure that your team has a playing slot, we can only accommodate a maximum of 24 teams, so first come first served.”
This memorial game is open to everyone.
“As Mike would have wanted, the dress code shall be casual and not club colours or uniforms,” added Norris.
“Some teams will want to dress the same, be it the same colour/design shirts, with the same pants. This will of course be acceptable.”
The cost of play is R400 for a team of four bowlers, which will include a light lunch.
Play will start at 10:00 but registration will open from 08:30 for any team that has only provisionally booked and wants to sort out payments and draw positions.
Before commencement of the day’s competition for the Floating Trophy, the Lake Club will be hosting the favourite “corner to corner” game, with the prize of a ‘bottle’ – alcoholic beverage.
“The winner will be the closest to the bottle, and it will run under the jurisdiction of Mr Smith, just to keep some of us in line,” he said.
“There have been some bottles of Gin donated as spot prizes, so if you don’t get the corner-to-corner win, you may just hit it lucky with another treat.”
This event is open to all who wish to attend, be it bowlers, families and friends of bowlers as according to Norris, Mike would have wanted it to be a family fun day.
“Spectators are more than welcome to join us. We will have seating by the greens or you’re welcome to enjoy the shade and a cold drink in the Grapes Beer Garden,” he explained.
The games will be of 15 ends straight through.
“As we are sure it’s going to be hot, after the game, we will socialise in the main hall while scoring is worked out. This is when a light lunch will be served and the spot prizes will be handed out, as well as the main floating trophy, which will be handed to this year’s winners,” he concluded.
The Mike Blackstock Memorial will be an annual event and always played at the Lake in November.
