ERK paddlers break Dusi record

They finished in a time of 09:03:00 over the three days to finish in the top twenty

ERK paddlers Liam and Michael Stewart broke the 24-year-old fastest father and son record by 32 minutes to finish 19th overall at the Dusi Canoe Marathon last week.

The Stewarts finished in a time of 09:03:00 over the three days to finish in the top 20. Richard Tandy and Jonathan Nel from Boksburg completed the race in 10:37:00.

According to Gauteng Canoe Union media liaison Jenny Dallas, this year’s race was recognised as a K2 event.

“This year the Dusi was recognised as a kayak for two people and it alternates every year with K1 singles.

Although paddlers can and do participate in the boat of their choice, the winning titles are recognised based on the category of that year’s boats recognised,” she said.

“For many paddlers the Dusi is still the ultimate achievement in a year of paddling. In some years there are decent water levels while in other years it’s rocky, shallow and bony and requires lots of walking and carrying of boats. Many paddlers carry their broken boats for kilometres to find a repair kit to be able to continue the race.”

The men’s race was won by Andy Birkett and Dave Evans, while Abby Solms and Bianca Haw won the women’s race.
