Vipers aim for dominance in the rink

The Kempton Park-based club was founded nine years ago.

Although ice hockey has been played in the country since the 1930s, it still does not enjoy much support.

The Vipers Ice Hockey Club aims to bring excitement and love to the game in Ekurhuleni.

“We are committed and dedicated to team building, fun, discipline and self-improvement,” read the club’s motto.

The Kempton Park-based club was founded nine years ago and is a member of the Gauteng Ice Hockey Association (GIHA).

Club member Michelle Gibson spoke fondly of the club she joined seven years ago.

“We love the game. Every member of the club is great and make it a pleasure to be involved,” Gibson said.

Playing out of the Festival Mall ice rink, the club comprises u-14, u-16, u-18, second division and development ladies’ teams.

Although the club had a turbulent 2021 season because of Covid-19, this year promises to be a good year, according to Gibson.

“We have new members from ages six to 40 who have joined our club.

“Our second division team has been on form, winning all its matches so far,” she said.

The club recently unveiled its new playing gear.

They also have a clubhouse in Avion Park where they will host their social events.

“We are growing as the Vipers family,” Gibson concluded.
