Cricketer pleads for help to go to world cup

Homann was selected in the 12-member South African Indoor Cricket women’s squad to represent the country at the global showpiece Down Under. She needs funding to cover travel, accommodation and other expenses.

Michelle Homann, from Benoni Northerns Women’s Cricket and Benoni Action Sport, needs financial assistance to go to the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) World Cup in Australia in October.

Homann was selected in the 12-member South African Indoor Cricket women’s squad to represent the country at the global showpiece Down Under. She needs funding to cover travel, accommodation and other expenses.

“We depart on October 4 and return on the 18th. The amount needed per player is R60 000. That’s going to cover the tournament fee, flight, accommodation, transport, kit, visa and other expenses.

“We’ve done fund-raising, including raffles and quiz nights, but we are still far off. Indoor cricket is still an amateur sport so we really need people and companies to back us.

“If we can get the backing we need, it will elevate our opportunities and give us the platform to focus on the cricket and go on to represent our country.”

She told the City Times that her 20 year dream will finally be fulfilled.

“I’m ecstatic. This has been a dream that I’ve wanted to achieve for many years. It’s taken me over 20 years to finally represent the open ladies in a world cup. It’s been a long road to get where I am.

“I’ve had to put plenty of work and dedication and there’s still lots more work to be done in order to put in the best performances for the country.”

Homann started playing indoor cricket in 2002. She was introduced to the sport by her father.

“My father played action cricket and I’d tag along. Ultimately I started playing in a social league with my family at Benoni Action Sport.

“In 2002 I played my first indoor cricket with boys as there were no ladies teams. I have been playing for more than 20 years.”

She stated that her father played a big role in her development in the sport and this world cup will be in his honour.

“I wear number 66 in remembrance of my father who was born in 1966 but sadly passed away in 2017. He is my biggest inspiration as he was my first cricket coach. This world cup will be in remembrance of his contribution to my career.”

The tournament is scheduled from October 8-15, in Melbourne.
