Karatekas compete in development tournament
Athletes complete in preparation for provincial tournament
Teams from various karate dojos across Gauteng recently took part in the Inter-Provincial Gauteng Karate Federation’s (GKF) friendly development tournament.
More than 80 karateka flocked to the Benoni Christian School, where the event was hosted, on October 8.
According to Takis Chaniotakos, president of the Ekurhuleni Karate Federation, the tournament, which is an annual fixture, is held to enhance and develop participants’ skills to foster future champions.
“Tournaments such as these are essential to building partnerships between the various affiliated clubs across the five provincial districts,” said Kruber Pillay, president of GKF.
“It allows young and relatively inexperienced athletes to hone their skills on the mats in preparation for the provincial tournament in February, next year.
“It further bridges the gap between novice and elite karatekas thus ensuring a constant flow of new up-and-coming participants.”
