Box and Dine Tournament showcases local athletes

Boxing enthusiasts were treated at an extravaganza of blood, sweat and fists

Emperors Palace’s Cracker Jack Box and Dine Tournament drew major crowds as local boxing heavyweights squared up in the ring on December 10.

Benoni’s Michael Head faced off against Bryan Thysse of Germiston during their four-round light heavyweight battle on the undercard.

The young Benonian was on the losing end of a split decision.

This was only Head’s second professional fight and he showed plenty of grit after being sent to the canvas in the second round.

Johnny Muller of Harold Volbrecht’s The Hammer Gym in Boksburg lost to old rival Akani Phusi of Limpopo in their 10-round cruiserweight contest.

Having lost to Muller in 2020 and 2021, Phusi turned the tables on Saturday with the judges scoring the fight 98-97, 96-94 and 96-93 in Phusi’s favour.

Muller last fought in June, last year.
