Northerns’ development fund to empower young hockey players

The Benoni Northerns Hockey Club (BNHC) has announced a new development fund aimed at supporting junior players and fostering growth within the community.

This initiative, which includes a variety of programmes, will provide financial support and opportunities to young talented hockey players from low income households.

Furthermore, it aims to empower these youngsters and enhance their overall hockey experience.

“The fund seeks to create opportunities for underprivileged youth to excel in hockey, promote long-term loyalty and involvement with the BNHC and foster a culture of excellence, inclusivity and growth within the hockey community,” said BNHC chairperson Kyle Cameron.

“Through this initiative, the BNHC aims to empower the next generation of hockey players and contribute meaningfully to the local sporting landscape.”

Cameron explained that the fund will identify and support one promising Grade 10 boy and girl turning 16 that year to receive assistance for a three-year cycle until they matriculate.

“We want to nurture hockey talent, alleviate financial barriers and promote the growth of the sport within the community,” added Cameron.

Among some of the benefits are access to quality coaching and mentorship, full coverage of the BHNC membership and participation fees and an annual stipend to be used for, among others, coaching or umpiring courses and hockey equipment.

To qualify for funds, the player must come from a low-income home, attend school within the vicinity of BNHC, perform well academically and demonstrate a strong commitment to hockey.

The application process will open on June 1 and close on August 31.
