Kakora and Scholtz defend SA Open singles titles
The Badminton SA stars produced dominant performances in their matches to add the national titles to their collection.
Free State shuttlers Caden Kakora and Johanita Scholtz delivered commanding performances to successfully defend their SA Open men’s and women’s singles titles at John Barrable Hall on April 14.
The multiple national champions secured gold with straight-set victories over Misha Bredell and Elmè de Villiers. Kakora cruised past Cape Town Badminton Association’s (CTBA) Bredell 21-7, 21-7, while Scholtz defeated her provincial teammate De Villiers 21-8, 21-14.

Men’s singles
Kakora claimed his third consecutive national title in dominant fashion, underlining his status as the country’s top men’s singles player. Despite the scoreline, 16-year-old Bredell showed glimpses of promise against the experienced champion.
The opening game was one-way traffic, with Kakora racing to an 11-3 lead at the interval before comfortably closing it out 21-7.

Bredell started the second game brightly, edging ahead 2-0, but Kakora quickly regrouped. From 2-2, he took full control of the contest and never looked back, again leading by a wide margin at the interval before sealing the match 21-7.

“It feels great. It’s my third title in a row. I’m really happy that I’ve defended it again,” said Kakora.
“I played a really good game. I think my opponent struggled against my style, and I feel like I brought my best today.”

Women’s singles
Scholtz was equally dominant in her clash against De Villiers, taking control from the outset and never relinquishing her grip on the match.
She stormed to a 6-0 lead in the opening game before De Villiers got on the board. Scholtz quickly reasserted her authority, extending her advantage to 11-4 at the interval.

One of the standout moments came during a marathon rally, which ended with Scholtz diving full length to defend a tight net shot, eventually winning the point. She went on to take the first game 21-8.
The second game was more competitive early on, but Scholtz once again pulled away to lead 11-4 at the break.
De Villiers, drawing on her experience, fought hard to stay in the contest, but the defending champion proved too strong, closing out the match 21-14.

“Honestly, I’m grateful. Playing against your peers, friends and now family is an honour. Winning this title means a lot, though it gets tougher every year,” said Scholtz.
“There’s added pressure when you’re defending a title. I’m thankful I could step on the court, play my best match and push through. The juniors are coming up, and the competition keeps getting stronger, so I’m happy with my performance.”
