Handball ladies claim national championship
They beat Western Province 17-14 in the final.
The Gauteng Handball Federation (GHF) U20 women’s team were recently crowned national champions after claiming the National Women’s U20 Championship title in Cape Town.
The team beat hosts Western Province 17-14 in the final. Trailing 6-0 at the break, the ladies displayed sheer tenacity to wrestle the tie away from the home team.
“We had two months to prepare the team for the tournament. We are lucky because we had a larger pool to select from,” said the GHF chairperson, Nsizwa Mahlangu.
“Western Province was strong. They were leading at half-time but because of our team’s resilience, we came back strong and managed to win the game.

“I’m happy for the team and proud of what they have achieved,” he added.
Mahlangu revealed that the win has seen interest in the sport grow in the province and thus will be launching a provincial league soon.
“We are preparing to launch the Gauteng Handball League for men and women on September 17 at Orlando Sports Complex in Soweto. Since we arrived from Cape Town, we have been inundated with calls from youngsters interested in handball.
“The games will be held in venues across the province including Sinaba Stadium. We have teams from Daveyton, Katlehong, Pretoria and Soweto. The provincial department of sport and recreation will be assisting us with logistics and also in ensuring that the competition runs smoothly.”
