The 34th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight takes place on February 19 at the Boksburg Stadium and organisers expect a larger field.

A seeding event for the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg and 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour, last year’s race attracted more than 2 400 cyclists.

“This is a great value-for-money event with pre-entry participants in line for gifts and vouchers.

Joshua van Wyk won last year’s men’s 116km event.

“They will receive a superior Dis-Chem goody bag, a Vision Works free eye care assessment voucher and a shopping voucher from Cycle Lab,” said race organiser and Retina South Africa’s national secretary, Claudette Medefindt.

The 116km Super Classic will be contested by the best SA cyclists. Cash prizes will be awarded in the Cycling South Africa racing categories.

Last year, Farrarmere resident Joshua van Wyk won the men’s Super Classic, while Carla Oberholzer won the women’s race.

Josh van Wyk takes the first wheel at the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight (February).

“The 62km fun ride caters for young wannabe professionals and fun riders. A superb road bike valued at R20 000 from Cycle Lab is the prize in the donation draw.

“All entrants are eligible for one of the lucky draw prizes worth R83 000. The top prizes include a Venter bike trailer, a Sealy Posturepedic queen-size base set, sunglasses, hotel accommodation vouchers and many more,” Medefindt added.

All proceeds from the event go to finding treatments for retinal blindness and empowering people with retinal vision loss.

This event has raised more than R10m over the last 33 years and is one of the most popular cycling events on the Gauteng calendar.

Head of science at Reti South Africa Claudette Medefindt and Dusty Day.

“Retina South Africa acknowledges the Dis-Chem Foundation that has again pledged to match all participant donations of amounts over and above their entry fee. We are appreciative of and grateful for every cyclist who rides for the cause.”
