Spurs breathe sigh of relief after donation

The Benoni Spurs’ training base at Willowmoore Park was unplayable because of the long grass, while some parts of the facility were vandalised.

The Benoni Spurs FC can now focus on preparing for the new Easterns Local Football Association (ELFA) season after the problems at their training base at Willowmoore Park were finally resolved thanks to two generous sponsors.

According to the club’s chairperson, Zain Shah, the long grass and thick vegetation rendered the fields unplayable, thereby affecting their planning for the ELFA season, set to start next month.

But thanks to the agricultural machinery company Case IH and car tracking device company Cartrack, which donated a grass cutter and sponsored a pre-season tournament, Shah and his team can breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to a fruitful season.

“Our first issue was with the condition of the playing fields, which were unplayable because of the grass and other issues.

“The grass is now cut and the fields are in immaculate condition. The boys have started training for the new season.

“Without Case IH and Cartrack’s assistance, this wouldn’t have been possible. We thank them,” Shah said.
Cartrack’s head of leads management and marketing, Jarrod Rohland, said they are proud to contribute to a project that helps with community building.

“This is a rejuvenation of a long tradition of family building and sportsmanship. The Benoni Spurs and Young Stars FC will start their season rejuvenated and can look forward to the future,” Rohland stated.

Waseem Abdul from Case IH echoed Rohland’s views said it would help the club and its players plan better for the season.

The Benoni Spurs organised a pre-season tournament that featured 90 teams.

Shah and his team gave the facility a refurbishment after parts were allegedly vandalised by vagrants.

”We are proud of the work we’ve done with our sponsors. We have repaired the entire facility, repainted the walls, and installed new nets and floodlights.

“We are prepared for the new season. We hope it is a good one for all our teams,” Shah explained.

To celebrate this, the Benoni Spurs organised a pre-season tournament on March 11 and 12, and 90 teams from Gauteng and North West took to the field.

The fields, divided into several five-a-side pitches, featured various age group matches, and the sidelines were abuzz with fans supporting their favourite teams.

“We’ve got teams from Azaadville, Laudium, Lenasia and as far afield as Klerksdorp. We used this tournament to get our boys ready for the season.”
