Benoni Indians honours top performers after historic season

The club’s U10, U12 and U15 teams won the GPBC league and cup competitions.

After a historic season when the club’s age-group teams won the double of league and cup titles in the Gauteng Province Baseball Council league, the Benoni Indians awarded their best performers of the recently concluded provincial baseball season on April 16.

The club claimed the U10, U12 and U15 league and cup competitions, the first time the Indians have won the league and cup in three age groups in the same year.

Aiden McAllister walked away with the player of the season, while seasoned coach Shaun Schwartz won the junior chairman’s trophy.

The club’s juniors’ chairperson, Clifford White, thanked the coaches and players for their commitment and dedication.

“This season was the result of the hard work and effort put in by the players and the coaches. The dedication and time committed by these coaches, who are all experienced baseball players, give our eager players the edge.”

White explained their success was due to their development programmes which ensured the club increased its pool of players.

“The programmes put in place from the grassroots level and our T-Ball schools programme continue to increase our numbers and strengthen the club. With all our age groups successfully taking the league and cup trophies, it creates an environment for growth and excellence in all teams,” said White.

The chairperson said he was proud of how the various age groups played this season, adding that the club will dominate in the sport.

“It has taken several years to see the fruits of our labour, and this season shows our philosophy is working well.

“We have had teams achieve great success before, but this year’s trifecta makes the Indians a force to be reckoned with. To win these titles in U10, U12, and U15, is a tremendous accolade. We are extremely proud of all our players.

“In the last year, our club had eight players represent South Africa at various world cups around the world, and I’m sure many more will come from our fields at Indians in the near future.”
