The Kings of the City were crowned the champions of the inaugural Diski and Chill six-a-side tournament at Ebotse outdoor courts on May 21.

The Kings beat Destroyers 3-2 in a pulsating final with both teams going hammer and tongs on the artificial turf, leaving the fans on the edge of their seats.

The Kings brushed aside Soft Kings FC 2-0 in the quarter-final while beating Joga Bonito 1-0 in the semis.

Destroyers’ road to the final featured 2-0 wins against Intuthuko and Bafana ba Vibe, respectively, before their final against Kings of the City.

The organiser of the tournament, Hlulani Nyalunga, told the Benoni City Times their long-term plan is for the proceeds to go towards a charity of choice.

“We are playing for a good cause and we know this is going to grow because we’ve got lots of teams that want to be a part of this initiative,” Nyalunga said.

Nyalunga invited companies and brands to come on board and invest in sports and development, adding that they will also use this initiative to promote small businesses.

“We believe in the spirit of Ubuntu. I received lots of calls from guys running small businesses wanting to place their stalls here. These are young people who see the vision and want to be a part of it. In future, we will invite them to come and advertise their businesses to give them an opportunity to make an income.”

The tournament featured eight teams.
